Body dark brown; tarsi yellow and tibiae extensively brown, antennal segments I–II and VII–VIII brown, III–V yellow and VI yellow in basal third; fore wing banded, brown basally and with a white band sub-basally, medially and sub-apically; apex dark. Head strongly sculptured and not distinctly constricted behind eyes; ocellar region elevated. Antennae 8-segmented, III & IV with forked sense cones; VIII elongated. Pronotum reticulate, without long setae; without internal markings on reticles. Mesothoracic endofurca without spinula and metathoracic endofurca with long curved paired arms extending to mesothorax. Mesonotum not divided medially. Metanotum with reticulated median area forming a triangle; paired campaniform sensilla present; one pair of long setae arising medially. Tarsi 1-segmented. Fore wing with first setal row almost complete, bearing about 20 setae; second row incomplete; veinal setae stout and dark, about as long as fore wing median width. Abdominal tergites II–VII with transversal lines of sculpture medially and polygonal reticles laterally; lateral thirds with microtrichia irregularly arranged; II–VIII with one pair of small and wide apart median setae; II with a group of recurved and stout microtrichia anterolaterally; X slightly elongate and with complete longitudinal division. Sternites reticulated and with three pairs of small posteromarginal setae. Both sexes fully winged.
Male with a lateral tooth-like process on abdominal segment V; sternites lacking pore plates.
Intraspecific variation
Antennal segments VI & VII sometimes almost fused.
Genus and similar species information
Hoodothrips is a Neotropical genus closely related to the Old World genus Astrothrips. Comprises three species that have strongly fusiform setae on fore wings and a group of stout and recurved microtrichia on abdominal tergite II. Hoodothripslineatus is distinctive in having antenna 8-segmented and fore wing with the first row of setae almost complete.
World distribution
Described from Trinidad, it is also recorded from Brazil and Cuba.
Breeding on leaves. Although collected in several unrelated plant species, no host plant associations is recorded. Always found in low numbers.
