Colour brown, legs distinctively paler; antennal segments I–II & VI–VIII brown, III–V yellow, except for the brown tip of V; fore wings pale. Head with three pairs of ocellar setae, pair III very small and arising close to anterior margin of posterior ocelli. Antennae 8-segmented, III & IV with forked sense cones. Pronotum slightly longer than wide and with two pairs of short and broadly expanded posteroangular setae; anteromarginals and anteroangulars not developed. Mesothoracic spinula weak; metathoracic spinula absent. Metanotum with irregular lines of reticulation posteromedially; paired campaniform sensilla present; two pairs of setae, median pair long and stout, arising behind anterior margin. Tarsi 2-segmented. Fore wing with first and second row of setae incomplete. Abdominal tergite I with minute teeth on posterior margin; II–VIII with craspeda and with irregular lines of sculpture; VIII with a row of minute microtrichia close to posterior margin. Sternites with deep craspeda but without discal setae; three pairs of posteromarginal setae. Both sexes fully winged.
Male with transverse pore plates on abdominal sternites III–VII.
Intraspecific variation
Not recorded.
Genus and similar species information
The genus Salpingothrips is possibly originated from the Oriental region and comprises only three species. The members of this group are characteristic in bearing two pairs of greatly expanded setae on posterior angles of pronotum. Salpingothrips minimus can be distinguished from the other species by the uniformly brown colour and the pale fore wings. A key to Salpingothrips species is provided by Kudo (1972).
World distribution
Described from Central America, it is possibly originated from the Oriental region. It is also recorded from Brazil and Venezuela.
Possibly breeding on leaves, mainly associated with Fabaceae. In Brazil it was recorded on Glycine max (Lima et al. 2013).
