The leaf-gall thrips of Ficus

 

Ornamental Ficus trees are frequently attacked by thrips around the world. Several species of the genus Gynaikothrips cause leaf fold galls in these plants, and their damage could lead to premature leaf-drop. One of the most common species is Gynaikothrips uzeli, which infests Ficus benjamina leaves (see photos). This species is known as the weeping fig thrips. Another species, Gynaikothrips ficorum, induces leaf-galls on Ficus microcarpa around the world, being commonly called Cuban laurel thrips.
