Diagnosis

Body colour white; antennal segments V–IX brown. Head without reticulation, with two pairs of exceptionally long and fringed setae, anterior pair longer. Antennae 9-segmented, III & IV with long, forked sense cones. Pronotum without reticulation; two pairs of long, fringed posteroangular setae also with two pairs of similar setae on anterior angles. Meso and metathoracic spinula well-developed. Metanotum reticulate; median setae minute, arising far behind anterior margin. Fore wings unusually slender, both veins with widely spaced rows of long, fringed setae. Abdominal tergites III–VII lateral thirds with lines of sculpture bearing microtrichia, posterior margins without craspedum or comb of microtrichia; II–VI with pair of short and wide apart median setae. Sternites without discal setae, with three pairs of long marginal setae.

 

Male not studied.

 

Intraspecific variation

Not recorded.

 

Genus and similar species information

This genus comprises two species, both described from the Neotropics, and possibly related to Corynothrips and Rhabdothrips (Mound & Marullo 1996). The second species, C. nubilicus, was described from Brazil and can be distinguished from C. pallidus by the 8-segmented antennae.

 

World distribution

Described from Panama, it is widespread around Caribbean Islands and also known from Brazil.

Life history

Found on leaves of many plants, as avocado and cacao, but no host-plant association is referred.
