Body brown to dark brown; tarsi and tibiae mainly yellow; antennal segments III–V yellow; fore wing brown with paler sub-basal band. Head strongly sculptured and constricted behind eyes; ocellar region strongly elevated. Antennae 8-segmented, III & IV with simple sense cones. Pronotum reticulate, without long setae. Meso and metathoracic endofurca without spinula, with short arms. Mesonotum without median longitudinal division. Metanotum with reticulate median area, campaniform sensilla large, one pair of setae near posterior margin. Tarsi 1-segmented. Fore wing first and second veins with setal row incomplete; veinal setae minute. Abdominal tergites II–VIII with pair of small median setae; lateral thirds and anterior margin with reticulate sculpture; VIII with posteromarginal craspedum; X elongate, with complete longitudinal division. Sternites with entire craspedum, three pairs of small posteromarginal setae. Both sexes usually fully winged.
Male tergite IX with pair of thorn-like setae; sternites III–VII each with large U-shaped pore plate.
Intraspecific variation
Adults sometimes micropterous.
Genus and similar species information
The genus Dinurothrips includes only two species, both Neotropical, and both with strong body sculpture and fore wing major setae rather small. Males have curious U-shaped pore plates on the abdominal sternites. The only other species in the genus, D. vezenyii, is also known from Brazil, but differs in having the tarsi 2-segmented and the mesonotum with a median longitudinal pseudodivision.
World distribution
Described from Puerto Rico, it is widespread to Brazil, Caribbean and Central America, USA, Colombia, Peru; has been also introduced to Micronesia (Guam).
Breeding on the leaves of several plant species, mainly Solanaceae. It is also reported feeding on banana and various garden plants.
Economic importance
It has been referred to as damaging banana leaves in Guam (Micronesia) and mint (Mentha sp.) in Brazil (Lima et al. 2016).
