Diagnosis

Body extensively dark brown; all tarsi yellow, tibiae yellow with brown shadings; abdominal segment X yellow; antennal segments I–II yellow, III–IV shaded, V–VIII brown; fore wings banded, mainly brown with clearly defined sub-basal pale band. Head with several transversal lines of sculpture and with an occipital apodeme close to posterior margin of eyes; three pairs of ocellar setae; ocellar region closely transversely striate. Antennae 8-segmented, III & IV with forked sense cones, and a constricted, slender apical neck. Pronotum transversely reticulate, but with dark pronotal median blotch bearing closely spaced and few irregular striae; one pair of posteroangular setae developed; reticles with internal markings.Meso & metathoracic endofurca with spinula present. Metanotum with transverse lines of reticulation anteriorly and elongated longitudinal reticles posteromedially; paired campaniform sensilla absent; two pairs of long setae close to anterior margin. Metasternum anterior border rounded. Tarsi 2-segmented. Fore wing with first setal row essentially complete and second vein with one or two setae. Abdominal tergites I–VIII covered with microtrichia arranged in closely spaced rows; II–VIII with a pair of long close together median setae, and a complete comb of posteromarginal microtrichia, which is shorter on anterior tergites; tergite IX with 2 pairs of mid-dorsal setae. Sternites covered with microtrichia, including medially; three pairs of long posteromarginal setae. Both sexes fully winged.

 

Male without pore plates on abdominal sternites.

 

Intraspecific variation

Not recorded.

 

Genus and similar species information

Almost 120 species are included in Neohydatothrips, most from tropical countries (Mound & Tree 2009). All of them have the abdominal sternites and lateral thirds of tergites covered by rows of fine microtrichia, with many of them being bicoloured and with banded fore wings. This group is closely related to Hydatothrips, but anterior margin of metasternum is transverse or with weak emagination. Neohydatothrips basilaris can be distinguished from the other South American Neohydatothrips by the dark body colour and by the pronotal reticles transverse with internal markings. It is similar to N. fimbriatus in having a complete fringe of microtrichia across the posterior margin of tergites II–VIII. A key to the Neotropical species of Neohydatothrips is provided by Lima & Mound (2016a).

 

World distribution

Described from Cuba, but recorded from Brazil, Costa Rica and Panama.
