Body yellow or brownish yellow with ocellar region, pronotal blotch, anterior margin of mesonotum and posterior margin of metanotum light brown; tergal antecostal ridge dark, abdominal tergites II–VI shaded laterally, VII–VIII shaded medially, IX–X yellow; fore wings grey, darker sub-basally; antennal segment I pale, II usually shaded, III and base of IV pale; hind tibiae yellow, femora lightly shaded.Head with occipital apodeme not confluent with posterior margin of eyes, ocellar area irregularly reticulate. Antennal segments III & IV with apex not constricted to neck. Pronotum transversely striate, blotch well-defined; mesonotum and anterior part of metanotum striate; metasternal plate with shallow emargination. Fore wing second vein with one seta distally. Tergites VII–VIII with complete comb of long microtrichia on posterior margin, no comb on remaining tergites; tergite IX with 2 pairs of mid-dorsal setae. Both sexes fully winged.
Male smaller than females, sternite VII with one small circular pore plate.

Genus and similar species information
Almost 120 species are included in Neohydatothrips, most from tropical countries (Mound & Tree 2009). All of them have the abdominal sternites and lateral thirds of tergites covered by rows of fine microtrichia, with many of them being bicoloured and with banded fore wings. This group is closely related to Hydatothrips, but anterior margin of metasternum is transverse or with weak emagination. Neohydatothrips burungae is unusual in having the interocellar area distinctly but weakly reticulate, much as in N. gracilipes and N. samayunkur. A key to the Neotropical species of Neohydatothrips is provided by Lima & Mound (2016).
World distribution
Described from Panama with one synonym from Argentina, this species is also known from Brazil and Mexico.
Recorded as breeding on Medicagosativa, Phaseolusvulgaris and Solanum esculentum in Argentina.
