Diagnosis

This species was not studied for this work. It has coloration and structure very similar to Neohydatothrips burungae, from which it cannot be distinguished currently.

 

Intraspecific variation

Not recorded

 

Genus and similar species information

Almost 120 species are included in Neohydatothrips, most from tropical countries (Mound & Tree 2009). All of them have the abdominal sternites and lateral thirds of tergites covered by rows of fine microtrichia, with many of them being bicoloured and with banded fore wings. According to Lima & Mound (2016), it is not possible to know if Neohydatothrips signifer and N. burungae refer to one or two species.

 

World distribution

Described from Mexico, and also recorded from the Caribbean and South American countries, such as Brazil and Colombia.

Life history

It is collected from leaves of various plants, including Asteraceae and passion fruit.

 

Economic importance

This species is mentioned as a pest in passion fruit in Colombia (Santos et al. 2012).
