Neurothrips is a genus with six species distributed across the neotropics. It is characteristic in having a narrow longitudinal groove in the abdomen, where the wings rest when not in use; and three pairs of flattened wing-retaining setae on abdominal tergites II–VII. Moreover, the body is covered by complex reticulation, the mouth cone is elongated, and the anal setae on the tube are unusually long. Neurothrips frontalis differs from N. allopterus for lacking a tubercle on the fore femora and not bearing duplicated cilia on forewings; and from N. williamsi for not having wing-retaining setae on abdominal tergite VIII nor a dense layer of microtrichia on tergite IX. A key to Neurothrips species is available in Mound & Marullo (1996).
