Body brown, with fore tibia brown basally and yellow on apical half, fore tarsi yellow, mid and hind tarsi brownish-yellow; antennomeres I–II concolourous with head, II yellow at apex, III yellow basally and shaded on apical half, IV–VI yellow on basal half and brown apically, VII–VIII brown; fore wings weakly shaded with basal area brown; major body setae yellow to light brown. Head about 1.2 times longer than the width behind eyes, dorsal surface with transverse lines of sculpture, forming some irregular and elongate reticles; postocular setae as long as the length of a compound eye, with weakly expanded apices; maxillary stylets parallel and close together medially; mouth cone pointed. Antenna 8-segmented, III–IV with 3 elongate sense cones each. Pronotum weakly sculptured medially, striate posteriorly, notopleural sutures incomplete and short; 6 pairs of major pronotal setae with blunt to weakly expanded apices, 2 pairs on epimeral region; anteromarginal setae reduced. Mesonotum with irregular reticles medially, elongate reticles laterally, without internal markings. Metanotum with one pair of anterior discal setae and one major median pair; sculpture formed by longitudinally elongate reticles medially, longitudinally striate laterally, without internal markings. Fore tarsal hamus small. Fore wings with about 18–23 duplicated cilia. Pelta triangular with anterior margin straight, one pair of campaniform sensilla present; sculpture formed by small irregular reticles medially, larger near margins, without internal markings. Abdominal tergites with transverse lines of sculpture, II–VII with three pairs of wing-retaining setae. Both sexes macropterous.
Females have S-shaped spermatheca. Males are slightly smaller, with pore plates on sternites VII–VIII: a wide transverse band, posterior to discal setae, with reticulate texture.

Genus and similar species information
Holopothrips is a genus with about 60 known species, distributed almost exclusively in the Neotropics. Several species in this genus are associated to plant galls, as inducers or invaders, in plants of many families. Most Holopothrips species bear three pairs of wing-retaining setae on tergites II–VII, males have complex pore plates and frequently in other sternites besides VIII, and the female spermatheca is visible. About 40 species in this genus have been described or recorded from Brazil. Holopothrips cardosoi has some similarities with other dark-bodied and robust species in the genus, such as H. nigrisetis or H. nigrum. However, it is easily distinguished by the position of maxillary stylets within the head (almost touching medially and extending until the posterior margin of eyes) and by the metanotal sculpture (formed by weakly defined elongated reticles).
This thrips induces rosette galls in an unidentified Myrcia species (Myrtaceae).
