Body brown, with fore tibiae lighter than fore femora; antennomere I concolorous with head, II brown basally and yellow apically, III–IV yellow, V yellow but weakly shaded on apical half, VI light brown with basal quarter yellow, VII–VIII light brown; fore wings pale; major body setae brownish yellow. Head about 1.4 times longer than width behind eyes, dorsal surface with transverse lines of sculpture; postocular setae longer than a compound eye, with acute to weakly expanded apexes; maxillary stylets V-shaped and about 0.4 of head width apart; mouth cone pointed. Antenna 8-segmented, III–IV with 2 sense cones each. Pronotum with weakly defined equiangular reticles medially, notopleural sutures incomplete and short; 6 pairs of major pronotal setae with blunt to expanded apexes, 2 pairs on epimeral region; anteromarginal setae length vary from shorter to as long as anteroangular setae, remaining pronotal setae elongate. Mesonotum reticulate, without internal markings. Metanotum with one pair of anterior discal setae and one median major pair; sculpture formed by irregular reticles medially, elongate laterally, with faint internal markings medially. Fore tarsal hamus enlarged. Fore wings with about 9–11 duplicated cilia. Pelta triangular, one pair of campaniform sensilla present; sculpture formed by equiangular to elongate reticles, weakly defined medially, without internal markings. Abdominal tergites with transverse lines of sculpture, forming irregular reticles; II–VII with three pairs of wing-retaining setae, the third pair can be reduced or absent in some tergites. Both sexes macropterous.
Females bear a thickened S-shaped spermatheca. Male are slightly smaller and without a pore plate on sternite VIII.
Intraspecific variation
Some specimens may lack the third pair of wing-retaining setae in some tergites, or may lack this seta in one of the sides of a tergite.
Genus and similar species information
Holopothrips is a genus with about 60 known species, distributed almost exclusively in the Neotropics. Several species in this genus are associated to plant galls, as inducers or invaders, in plants of many families. Most Holopothrips species bear three pairs of wing-retaining setae on tergites II–VII, males have complex pore plates and frequently in other sternites besides VIII, and the female spermatheca is visible. About 40 species in this genus have been described or recorded from Brazil. Holopothrips longisetus is one of the few species in the genus where males lack pore plates, and can be differentiated from them for having very long body setae, head elongated with v-shaped maxillary stylets, pronotal epimeral region with two pairs of setae and female spermatheca thickened, but not swollen medially.
This species induces leaf galls in Myrcia splendens (Myrtaceae).
