Diagnosis

Body brown, with apical half of fore tibiae lighter and all tarsi yellow; antennomeres I–II concolorous with head, II lighter at apex, III–VI yellow, VII–VIII weakly shaded with brown; fore wings pale, but brown at base; major body setae light brown. Head about 1.2 times longer than width behind eyes, dorsal surface with transverse lines of sculpture; dorsolateral region of head with small “punctuations” on sculpture lines; postocular setae as long or shorter than the diameter of an ocellus, with acute to weakly capitate apexes; maxillary stylets parallel to weakly V-shaped, about half of head width apart; mouth cone rounded. Antennae 8-segmented, III–IV with three elongated sense cones each. Pronotum fully covered by irregular reticulation, notopleural sutures incomplete and short; 5 pairs of major pronotal setae, one pair on epimeral region; all major pronotal setae well developed and with expanded apexes. Mesonotum with equiangular reticles medially, elongated laterally, with internal markings. Metanotum with 1–2 pairs of anterior discal setae and one median major pair; sculpture formed by longitudinally elongated reticles, with internal markings. Fore tarsal hamus small. Fore wings with about 5–8 duplicated cilia. Pelta triangular with straight anterior margin, one pair of campaniform sensilla present; sculpture formed by equiangular to irregular reticles medially, elongated laterally, weakly defined posteriorly, with internal markings. Abdominal tergites reticulated on lateral thirds, smooth medially; II–VII with three pairs of wing-retaining setae. Both sexes macropterous.

 

Females bear an S-shaped spermatheca. Males are slightly smaller, with reticulate pore plates on sternites VI–VIII: two anteroangular plates and two lateral plates on sternites VI–VII, two anteroangular plates and a median transverse band on VIII.

Genus and similar species information

Holopothrips is a genus with about 60 known species, distributed almost exclusively in the Neotropics. Several species in this genus are associated to plant galls, as inducers or invaders, in plants of many families. Most Holopothrips species bear three pairs of wing-retaining setae on tergites II–VII, males have complex pore plates and frequently in other sternites besides VIII, and the female spermatheca is visible. About 40 species in this genus have been described or recorded from Brazil. Holopothrips reticulatus shares some similarities with H. johanseni and H. mariae, being differentiated from them by the well-defined sculpture on pronotum, pelta with internal markings on sculpture, and female spermatheca not swollen medially.

Life history

This species was collected from Myrciaria dubia (Myrtaceae) leaves, apparently without the formation of leaf galls.
