Body brown, with fore tibiae, apical third of mid and hind tibiae, and all tarsi yellow; antennomeres I–II concolorous with head, II paler apically, III–VI yellow, VII–VIII yellow weakly shaded with brown; fore wings shaded with paler tips; body major setae light brown. Head length and width behind eyes subequal, dorsal surface reticulated; dorsolateral region of head with small “punctuations” on sculpture lines; postocular setae reduced or absent; maxillary stylets parallel and about one third of head width apart; mouth cone rounded. Antennae 8-segmented, III–IV with three elongated sense cones each. Pronotum fully covered by irregular reticulation, notopleural sutures incomplete and short; 5 pairs of major pronotal setae, one pair on epimeral region; anteromarginal setae reduced and with acute to blunt apexes, remaining major setae with expanded apexes. Mesonotal sculpture formed by equiangular reticles, with weak internal markings. Metanotum with 2–3 pairs of anterior discal setae and one median major pair; sculpture formed by longitudinally elongate reticles, with internal markings on lateral reticles. Fore tarsal hamus small. Fore wings with about 6–8 duplicated cilia. Pelta triangular with anterior margin straight, one pair of campaniform sensilla present; sculpture formed by elongated reticles medially, larger laterally, sculpture absent marginally and posteriorly, usually without internal markings. Abdominal tergites with irregular reticulation on lateral thirds, sculpture weak or absent medially; II–VII with three pairs of wing-retaining setae. Both sexes macropterous.
Females bear an S-shaped spermatheca. Males are slightly smaller, with reticulated pore plates on sternites V–VIII: two anteroangular and two lateral plates on sternites V–VII, two anteroangular plates and one median transverse band on VIII.

Genus and similar species information
Holopothrips is a genus with about 60 known species, distributed almost exclusively in the Neotropics. Several species in this genus are associated to plant galls, as inducers or invaders, in plants of many families. Most Holopothrips species bear three pairs of wing-retaining setae on tergites II–VII, males have complex pore plates and frequently in other sternites besides VIII, and the female spermatheca is visible. About 40 species in this genus have been described or recorded from Brazil. Holopothrips singularis is similar to H. reticulatus in several aspects, but is distinguished from it by the head sculpture (formed by equiangular reticles instead of elongated ones) and for males bearing pore plates on abdominal sternite V.
This species was collected from leaf galls in an unidentified species of Myrtaceae.
