Diagnosis
Female macropterous; body color yellow to yellowish brown, with thorax, coxae and femora darker, tibiae and tarsi light yellow; antennomeres I–II yellow, III–VII brown with lighter pedicel; wings weakly shaded with yellow, darker basally, without a dark median line. Antennae 7-segmented, basal antennomeres with stout and capitate setae; III and IV with 2 or 3 sense cones each; VII usually without a suture medially. Head slightly longer than wide, strongly reticulated; only the postocular setae is well-developed and capitate, shorter than the length of the eye; lateral margins curved and constricted behind globose eyes; maxillary stylets wide apart. Pronotum reticulated, with tubercles among the sculpture lines; with 4 pairs of well-developed and capitate setae, anteroangular pair closer to the reduced anteromarginal pair; prosternal basantra present. Meso- and metanotum strongly reticulated, with tubercles among the sculpture lines. Pterothorax without a pair of stout and capitate ventrolateral setae on each segment. Pelta wide and oval-shaped, with reticulated sculpture bearing some tubercles posteriorly; abdomen strongly sculptured, tergites II–VII apparently without wing-retaining setae. Tube cone-shaped, weakly reticulated only at base and without lateral setae, about 2.4x as long as basal width. All legs similar in appearance, tibiae without tubercles, fore tarsi with a short tooth. Fore wings without duplicated cilia.
Male similar to female, except for having setae S2 of abdominal tergite IX shorter. Pore plate present on abdominal sternite VIII, shaped like a thin transverse band.
Intraspecific variation
Macropterous, micropterous and apterous forms are known for this species. Micropterous and apterous specimens may show differences in colouration, shape of pelta, reduction or absence of ocelli and wing-retaining setae, among others.
Genus and similar species information
Glyptothrips is a genus with 14 valid species, with an apparently disjunct distribution between North and South America. The members of this genus have a strongly sculptured body, but tube usually smooth; head incut behind small, globose but well-developed eyes; postocular and main pronotal setae (except anteromarginal pair) well-developed and with capitate apex; and most species bear strong and capitate setae on basal antennomeres and/or ventrolateral region of pterothorax. Glyptothrips flavescens is distinguished from the other species in the genus for having the antennae with only 7 segments, thorax and abdomen sculpture with multiple tubercles, and for lacking the strong and capitate setae on the ventrolateral region of pterothorax.
