Traditionally, nine families are recognized in the order Thysanoptera, six of them with members in Brazil: Aeolothripidae, Heterothripidae, Merothripidae, Thripidae, Uzelothripidae that belong to the suborder Terebrantia, and Phlaeothripidae, which belongs to Tubulifera.
